They deemed it wise to take two cars. Because of the terrain near the lock-up, they used Milesâs Rav 4 (a relic from the last millennium) and Alexâs newer Kia Sportage. They parked the cars behind the metal building. The Rav 4, spattered in enough mud to make it look like a local farming vehicle was parked in front of Alexâs car to hide it.
Once inside, Sarah spread the coded paperwork on a workbench hastily cleaned for the purpose. The building was cold, but Gwen lit an old heater to get some warmth going. The team watched Sarahâs gaze grow distant as she studied the pages, her fingers lightly tracing the lines of numbers and the gaps between them, checking them against a small book of tables none of them had seen before. Alex looked intrigued, but he didnât interrupt.
Gwen looked on doubtfully. âCan you really make sense of all that?â
Sarahâs eyes flashed. âI believe I can. In Manchester, Jake was the expert on our team. Heâs the one that taught me, before⦠everything went wrong.â Sarah trailed off, steadying herself. âLetâs just say I learned from the best.â
Sarah bent over the codes again, keen to change the subject. She scribbled notes, piecing together sinister meanings only she could detect. Gwen and Miles exchanged a glance but knew better than to pry.
Later, Miles decided to go and fetch supplies.
They needed food, drink, and some rudimentary comforts to pass the time. Following Alexâs instructions, he drove all the way to Bodmin to avoid being seen by the local menaces. With Alexâs money, he picked up a bootful of food and drink, some blankets, cushions, four airbeds and a pump to inflate them. There was no telling how long they would be holed up like this. The only good point was how close it was to Trebarron and yet few people drove down these forgotten country lanes. When Miles returned, lugging the shopping with him, he noted the atmosphere was tense. Sarah was just as heâd left her, poring over the papers, making notes in a separate book. He smiled thinly as he saw Gwen and Alex sitting in silence beside the old workbench.
âSee you two are getting along like a house on fire,â he said, with a glint in his eye. They both gave him the look his remark deserved. Only Sarah glanced up with the thinnest of smiles but she was quick to hide it.
